Critical PHP RCE vulnerabilities: patch CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 now

Security alert · 21 October 2026

Organizations running PHP web services should treat CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 as an urgent patching priority. The PHP project has released fixes for two critical vulnerabilities that can enable remote code execution without authentication. Review internet-facing applications and internal services; do not wait for a CMS or framework update to replace the PHP runtime patch.

What makes these vulnerabilities dangerous?

CVE-2026-109618 concerns PHP's handling of memory exhaustion: a request can leave incompletely initialized data that cleanup later uses. CVE-2026-109619 concerns internal state that outlives the request memory it references and can be reused by a worker processing another request. The first advisory and second advisory explain the distinct mechanisms.

Successful exploitation can give an attacker code execution with the privileges of the PHP process. That creates a potential route to application data, secrets and service disruption.

Which deployments need attention?

The PHP team's warning covers installations serving web requests, including PHP-FPM, Apache mod_php, php-cgi, FrankenPHP and LiteSpeed. A demonstrated mod_php exploit can act before application code starts. Exposure and exploitability depend on the runtime and configuration; using FPM is not a reason to skip the update.

Install a fixed PHP release

PHPFixed upstream release
8.28.2.35
8.38.3.36
8.48.4.27
8.58.5.12

Use the applicable fixed release above or a newer supported security release. For distribution or managed-hosting packages, follow the supplier's advisory: security fixes may be backported without changing the upstream version number. Ubuntu's notice lists its corrected package revisions. PHP 8.1 and older no longer receive routine upstream updates; confirm vendor coverage or plan migration.

A practical response checklist

  1. Inventory: list hosts, containers, PHP versions, web handlers, owners and public endpoints.
  2. Patch: update every relevant package or base image, rebuild containers and redeploy all replicas.
  3. Restart: replace running PHP workers so old processes do not remain in service.
  4. Verify: check the web runtime, not just php -v in a shell. Confirm each pool and replica uses the corrected vendor build.
  5. Test and monitor: check login, sessions, uploads and critical transactions, then inspect logs for unusual failures or unexpected changes. Investigate suspected compromise separately from patching.

If an immediate update is blocked

Assign an owner and a deadline, restrict unnecessary exposure, and follow the PHP advisories for temporary controls applicable to your setup. These controls cover particular attack paths; they are not a complete substitute for installing the patch.
